    There is 40 GB RAM.
    The RAM is mismatched.
    It needs to be tested.
The DIMM /MB multichannel can be checked when there are 2 or RAM modules in use.
We had 1 OP check 64 GB RAM. It takes approximately 1 - 2 hours / GB RAM.
Just 1 error is a fail and you can abort testing.
Anything less than 8 passes needs to be repeated as there are so many false negatives.
A false negative is a test pass when there is malfunctioning RAM.
The RAM can be tested 2 modules at a time to reduce the continuous downtime.
If you can test the RAM modules with different SKU at the same time that would enable you to test the mismatched RAM.
See the owners manual for which DIMM should be used for 2 modules.
Alternatively if you have the time you could test all 4 RAM modules at the same time.
That is if you have other activities, alternative computer, or can use smart phone.

Maybe I'll pull out the two Dell memory cards and test the others.

You didn't answer my question about how I run the tests. Do I just boot from the USB and leave it? Will it automatically go on to the next pass when it finishes the first? The message about pressing Esc confused me, I want to make sure I get it right this time.

    Thanks again.

Whichever you think is most likely to identify the problem!
Yes, I just wanted to check that I was doing it right.

I'll set it off tonight and let it run. I don't think I'll be working tomorrow, so it can run for a while. We'll see what it says.

OK, so it's been running since Thursday evening, and if I read it correctly, it's on its 11th pass without any errors...

Does this confirm that I don't have a memory problem?

Hmm, let me rephrase that... does this confirm that my computer doesn't have a memory problem? I know I have one, but that's probably just old age!

Just to summarise where I'm up to...

*) Starting the machine sometimes works fine, sometimes not. Today I started it, and after the blue Windows logo, I had a black screen for 10-15 seconds, then the log in screen. However, when I logged in, the Start button didn't work. I restarted, and didn't get the black screen delay, but the Start button didn't work again. I restarted, and it seemed to hang at the black screen. After about 10 minutes, I manually restarted the machine, and it all went fine.

*) After the successful boot, I don't see any WHEA events.

*) Memory seems to be fine as far as I can see (waiting for confirmation to previous post)

*) Both disks seem to be fine. Starting with the data (D:\) drive disconnected doesn't seem to make any differences, and all checks I've run on the C: drive show it's fine.

Where do I go from here? There are clearly some serious issues with this machine, and reinstalling doesn't seem to help.

    Hello,

1-5) Will have to do later, as I'm working now.

6-7) I already did this. Do you need me to do them again? I haven't changed any of these settings.

    8) As mentioned earlier, the machine is about 18 months old (bought Jul '16). When it arrived, I upgraded the memory (described earlier), swapped the supplied HDD with an SSD, plugged in my data drive as a second drive and reinstalled Windows. No other parts were changed then or since.

    Thanks

    The logs displayed:
    C:\Windows\MEMORY.DMP was not found
    C:\Windows\Minidump does not exist.

    LogEvent : 1
    MinidumpDir : C:\Windows\Minidump
    MinidumpsCount : 5

The double checking of the menu options and the whocrashed crash dump test are to make sure that the computer is set up to create BSOD mini dump and memory dump files for debugging.

I just checked, and the two screenshots you asked for are identical with the two that I posted earlier.
