Windows 10: windows freeze DELL XPS15

You may want to check this. I was looking at your event log and saw quite a few warnings like:

The application \Device\HarddiskVolume6\Windows\System32\svchost.exe with process id 2924 stopped the removal or ejection for the device PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_A118&SUBSYS_06E41028&REV_F1\3&11583659&0&E8.

The Hardware ID seems to point to a PCIe Express Root Port - A118. On my system the M.2 SSD is connected but open Device Manager, and set it to see Device by Connection.

Then expand the ACPI section and drop down to the PCI Express Root Complex. If you see a line ending in PCI Express Root Port -A118, expand it and see what it connected to that port.

Knowing what that device is may help find a cause.

The 950 PRO is my system drive. Windows and all my applications are installed on it.

 

You need to understand, from here forward I am basically guessing as to what is going on. So, with that in mind, some questions.

Are you using the Samsung driver for the drive and any firmware updates available for it?

It shows Volume 6 in the warning which is fairly far down the drive unless you have another drive which also has some partitions. If you have another drive, have you tried disconnecting it? If you only have the one drive, maybe a picture of the Disk Management window would help.

If the warnings are correct, I don't know why some svchost would be trying to disconnect the drive. Are there any other entries in the Event Viewer about the time you get the warning messages?

You do have the latest Bios and chipset drivers for the system?

I have several Dell systems running a 960 Pro in the NVMe mode and none of them seem to show such warnings. The 950 Pro is the earlier version of the drive which may have some impact.

 

Driver is the latest. How do I find out the firmware version I am running?

I have the main system drive [C] with no partitions. [D] has my data on it and has one partition [E].

You are referring to event id 225. It looks like those occurred when I manually updated my operating system (see post #61).

I will check and update if not the latest.

Does it matter that my system disc is "Disc 1" and my data disc is "Disc 0" ?

You can look in your bios and see if the data disk is first in line to boot too.

 

...Event Viewer does not show any entries which correspond to my freeze, and I can not get a Crash Dump file to be created during the freeze either. Is there any other diagnostic tool which would show me exactly what is happening as the freeze occurs?

 

I had Task Manager open hoping to observe what it says when one of my freezes happens. Attached is what it showed. Basically the system started to act sluggish...i switched over to Task Manger...captured these two pictures...then windows stopped responding all together and I had to force a reset with the power button.

 

Looking at the hardware as a cause of the freeze you have already worked up the drive and bios.
The GPU, CPU, and RAM have not been fully tested.
These can be stress tested.

 

Could you provide instructions on how to preform these tests?

The testing is done not by time but by passes.

The more passes the better.

There are a significant number of false negatives if fewer than 8 passes are made.

A false negative is a pass when there is malfunctioning RAM.

There is 8 GB of RAM on the computer.

Memtest86+ version 5.01 testing takes approximately 1 - 2 hours /GB RAM

Just 1 error is a fail and you can abort testing.
