    Wireless Connections Preventing ISO Download

According to my ISP I should be achieving download speeds of 12 Mp/sec. We have 4 computers (an old XP tower wired directly to our modem/router, a Windows 7 laptop, a Windows 10 laptop and a Windows 7 tower) and an iPad. Everything but the XP tower is wireless.

After the recent problems I had with the W10 laptop I figured it was time I had a W10 disk, but I can't ever seem to get it to complete. It's a 4.1GB file, but no matter which browser or computer I use it always fails.

When I turn off the wireless on my modem/router and run a speed test on the old XP tower I pretty much get that 13 Mb/sec download speed. When I turn the Wi-Fi on I'm lucky if I don't get a 'Latency Test Error' msg. If it does complete I get a DL speed of around 2.0 Mp/sec. When I actually try to download that ISO file (as I am now for about the 6th time), it'll start out giving me a rate of about 500 Kb/sec and telling me that it'll complete in just a few hours. But as time goes by the rate drops and drops and drops, and the estimated time to complete is soon up over a day. Right now Firefox is telling that it'll take 22 hours to complete at a rate of 39.7 Kb/sec. I know it won't complete.

We've got way too much going on with ipads and laptops for me to turn of the wireless for the amount of time this'll take to download.

    What is another solution?

    :)

  2. How to Disable Automatic Update of Windows 10

If Win10 were installed & working properly, Windows should have detected the tethered connection as a Metered Connection - in which case no updates would have been downloaded or installed. That being said, if Windows Update was
already in the process of downloading or installing an update when daughter switched to the tethered (mobile wireless) connection, the process would not be interrupted.

If daughter's internet connection is a true WiFi (wireless) connection, she should be able to configure it as a metered connection. See

Are you using an ethernet cable or wireless to connect your computer to the router? An ethernet cable connection is faster and more reliable for large downloads. An ethernet cable is an inexpensive purchase.

Connect to a mains electricity supply if your computer is a laptop.

Disable your anti-virus and firewall whilst upgrading.

Since you have the WinXP computer using an Ethernet port on the Router via a cable you should have 3 available ports [normally 1 Uplink and 4 Ethernet/Network ports]. Have you tried one of the other computers via that same type Ethernet cable for the download? I've found using the cable connection is always more reliable than Wi-Fi . The Wi-Fi is only between the computers involved and the Router, could also be called a wireless network. That is not the same as my 5Mbps [Megabits per second] Wireless DSL Internet service that is from my Router out to the WWW.

I don't think we're on the exact same page here... I can certainly download the iso file thru Firefox to an external drive on the old XP with the wired connection. And I could take the Windows 10 laptop down and plug it into another Ethernet port on the modem and download it. My problem is the Wireless itself being turned on. With the wireless button on the modem in the 'off' position, I get download speeds approaching 13 Mb/sec - this is running the speedtest on the XP tower. If I turn the wireless button 'on', my speed drops by about 85%. I'm guessing that the ipad, the other 2 laptops and the Windows 7 tower are sucking the life out of my connection - even if they're not being used.

Could be but your System Specs give nothing about the type of equipment you have. Wireless Networking is seldom as fast as a wired connection, especially if the Router is capable of Gigabit [1000Kbps] speed.

What sort of system specs would you like? I've already mentioned that we've got 4 computers and an ipad. I don't believe system specs have spots to specify multiple entries. Since this is a Windows 10 forum, the W10 is a Dell 64 bit laptop. There is no indication of a model number anywhere on the chassis or in the battery compartment. But what my various computer makes/models have to do with this problem is mystifying. I can supply the make and model of my router/modem combo unit if you think it of value.

And I certainly know that a wired connection is almost always faster than wireless. But the difference between 13 Mb/sec, and 55 Kb/sec is staggering. If you don't have anything else to add, please let someone else take over.
