How to Add or Remove Personalize Desktop Context Menu in Windows 10


Information When you right click or press and hold on your desktop and click/tap on Personalize, it will open to Background in Settings -> Personalization icon.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove Personalize on the desktop context menu of all users in Windows 10.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to add or remove the Personalize desktop context menu.



Note This can be handy if you wanted to remove unused desktop context menu items.


EXAMPLE: Personalize on desktop context menu





Here's How:

1. In the search box (Windows+S) on your taskbar or Start menu, type regedit, and press Enter to open Registry Editor.

2. If prompted by UAC, click/tap on Yes.

3. In the left pane of Registry Editor, browse to the location below. (see screenshots below)
*Arrow HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DesktopBackground\Shell\Personalize







4. If you have not already, you will need to first step 3)

5. If you have not already, you will need to second step 3)

6. If you have not already, you will need to third step 3)

7. If you have not already, you will need to fourth step 3)

8. Do step 9 (add) or step 10 (remove) below for what you would like to do.


9. To Add Personalize to Desktop Context Menu
NOTE: This is the default setting.
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 11 below.

10. To Remove Personalize from Desktop Context Menu
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 11 below.

Remove_Personalize_from_desktop_context_menu.reg

11. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

12. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

13. If prompted, click on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

14. You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

The tutorial still works just fine, but it has to be followed completely step by step to do so.

 

I did follow it step by step. This is the only context menu tutorial with which I've had trouble. On another note, the one you have posted on sevenforums.com is indeed working.

 

You were referring to an automated and manual method in the tutorial, but they are not separate methods. That's what made me think that you may not have done all the steps since all steps have to be done except to select either step 8 or 9. Is that what you did?

Please also clarify what you meant by "wouldn't allow anybody to access the program itself." to see what that they may have been for. *Smile

 

Well, at first I tried using just Step 8 and Step 9 (the "automatic" methods). Since that didn't work, I tried doing Step 1-7 and then manually adding a '-' to the default string under Data in the Registry Editor. But I just tried the "automated" methods again, and they are indeed working, so you were right! I know this isn't the place, so I'm going to send you a personal message regarding removing two other context menu options ('Cut' and 'Create shortcut') for files and folders.

 

I'm glad that's all it was, and you are able to use it now. *Smile
