How to Change Windows Photo Viewer Background Color in Windows


Information You can use Windows Photo Viewer to view your image files in a variety of ways, print, order prints, attach pictures to an e‑mail message, burn, or open photos in another app on your PC.

If you like, you can change the default background color in Windows Photo Viewer.

This tutorial will show you how to change the background color in Windows Photo Viewer to any color for your account in Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10.

Here's How:

1. Press the Win+R keys to open Run, type regedit in Run, and click/tap on OK to open Registry Editor.

2. Navigate to the key below in the left pane of Registry Editor. (see screenshot below)
*Arrow HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Photo Viewer\Viewer




3. In the right pane of the Viewer key, double click/tap on the BackgroundColor DWORD to modify it. (see screenshot above)


Note If you do not have a BackgroundColor DWORD, then right click or press and hold on an empty space in the right pane of the Viewer key, click/tap on New, click/tap on DWORD (32-bit) Value, type BackgroundColor for the name, and press Enter.


4. Select (dot) Hexadecimal, type FF along with the RGB value (ex: "000000") of the color (ex: black) you want from the table at the Microsoft links below, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

• Colors listed by Hue
• Colors listed by Lightness
• Colors listed by Name
• Colors listed by Saturation

Note For example:

The RGB value number for the color Black from the links above is 000000.

You would enter: FF000000




5. Open an image with Windows Photo Viewer to see your change.

6. When finished, you can close Registry Editor if you like.

Problems with Windows 10 Photo App Color Rendition

I've had the same problem as well. The typical no-help solutions from here prompted me rely on the classic Windows Photo Viewer as well. You can, by the way, change the background on the Windows Photo Viewer to black as well. Follow these instructions

They made a mistake on the color code: pure black should be FF000000

 

Windows 10 default Photo Viewer - png files - Black Background Issues

The issue here is the photo viewer's background is BLACK, hence black png image on black background = 0. I was looking to change the background color of the image viewer to fix this. Is there a way to change it? The photo viewer is working perfectly fine,
they just did not consider the black png on black background.

 

Not quite!
However, you could create a shortcut and invoke 'Universal File Explorer', which has the dark theme option.

Thanks but I prefer the counterpart written in Win32 more, sadly they rarely improve the Win32 aspect in Windows nowadays.
