Information Sometimes you may need or want to know how much, the speed, and what type of system memory (RAM) you have installed in your PC without having to open the case or install third party software.

This tutorial will show you different ways on how to determine system memory (RAM) size (GB), speed (MHz), and type (DDR) in Windows 10.

    CONTENTS:
    • Option One: To Determine Memory Size and Type in Task Manager
    • Option Two: To Determine Memory Size, Speed, and Type in Command Prompt
    • Option Three: To Determine Memory Size in Settings
    • Option Four: To Determine Memory Size in Control Panel
    • Option Five: To Determine Memory Size in System Information

OPTION ONE [/i] To Determine Memory Size and Type in Task Manager
    1. Open Task Manager in More details view. (see screenshot below)

    2. Click/tap on the Performance tab, and click/tap on Memory.

    3. You will see the size (ex: "32.0 GB") and type (ex: "DDR3") towards the top right corner.

  3. System Reserved Memory issue

    Hi Rowan,

The reduction in available system memory depends on the configuration of the following:

    • The devices that are installed in the computer and the memory that is reserved by those devices
    • The ability of the motherboard to handle memory
    • The system BIOS version and settings
    • The version of Windows 10 that is installed
    • Other system settings

As an initial troubleshooting step, I suggest that you check your system for memory problems.

    Here's how:

    • Type mdsched.exe in the search bar and select the best match.
    • When prompted by the User Account Control, enter an admin user name and password, and click
      Yes.
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to run it.

Let us know how it goes.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

Windows 10 - 'Your computer is low on memory' alert message is displayed randomly.

    Hi Aravind,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community, we appreciate your interest in Windows 10.

I understand the inconvenience that you are facing on Windows 10, we will certainly help you with this issue.

The computer hard drive needs certain space to run certain programs, such as the internet, installers, updaters and what not. When your computer is low on memory, it means that you've filled up most of the RAM. You can view how much you have
    by following these steps;

I suggest you to change the size of virtual memory and check if it helps.

To change the size of virtual memory follow the steps below:

    • Right click on This PC.
    • Go to Advance System Settings.
    • On the Advanced tab, under
      Performance
      , click Settings.
    • Click the Advanced tab, and then, under
      Virtual memory, click Change.
    • Clear the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives check box.
    • Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.
    • Click Custom size, type a new size in megabytes in the
      Initial size (MB) or Maximum
      size (MB) box.
    • Click Set and then click OK.

I would also suggest you to check if a program overuses memory

If the computer becomes low on memory whenever you run certain programs, one or more of those programs might have a memory leak. To stop a memory leak, you need to close the program. To repair a memory leak, you need to check for updates for
the program or contact the publisher of the software.

To determine which program is using the most memory, follow these steps:

    • Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete key to open Task Manager.
    • Click the Processes tab.
    • To sort programs by memory usage, click
      Memory.
Hope it helps, reply to us with the status of your issue. We will be happy to assist you.

    Thank you.
