Different coloring capabilities with different Win10 versions?

OK, so we all know Win10's basic look is rather heavily white, and I'm finding that hard to work with. I've learned that, on my own PC, I can to go Settings> Personalization> Colors and add color to window title bars, which helps quite a lot. But that feature is much more limited on my office PC, enabling only very subtle color accents and leaving title bars white.

These 2 PCs use Win10 Enterprise and Professional, respectively. I noticed the version/build designations are also different: 10.0.240 and 10.0.586, with the higher enabling title bar colors.

Do we just have an earlier/inferior version at the office? I understood Win10 was structured for continuous updates so that we'd all have more or less identical features. Is this not precisely true across editions (Enterprise vs Pro)?

I thirst for title bar coloring ability & would like to know what I'm talking about when I approach our not-always-receptive IT guy.

    Thanks for any clues.

    Mark

    :)

  2. Different color profiles in Win10 at different resolutions?

I recently bought a 4k monitor (Acer S277HK). It works very well in Windows 10, except for one rather annoying problem:

While in 4k resolution, there's a high contrast and all colors look vivid, as they should. However, if any app (typically a game) switches to 1920x1080 resolution, all colors look lower-contrast and washed out. Darker colors are visibly brighter and overall
there is less pronounced contrast. (I'm not completely sure, but it almost looks like a gamma correction problem.) This happens also if I just switch Windows itself to 1920x1080 resolution.

I am quite certain that this problem is in Windows (or possibly the Nvidia settings in Windows). When I try the same resolution change in Linux, everything looks the same color-wise. Likewise if I do the same with a PS4 Pro, everything looks the same in
terms of colors. (I am making sure that in both situations the monitor is indeed in 1920x1080 resolution by checking the info box in the monitor's own menu.)

I have found a work-around for the problem: In Nvidia's settings, I have selected that for any non-native resolution it's the graphics card that performs upscaling, while retaining the monitor at 4k. When I do this, the problem doesn't happen. While this
is technically speaking a fix for the problem, it would still be nice to know what exactly is causing it, and how to correct it properly.

That last part is, in fact, a bit puzzling. After all, Windows thinks that it's in 1920x1080 mode, even though the monitor might be in 4k mode. Thus if it were some resolution-dependent color profile setting, one would think that the same phenomenon would
happen regardless. But no. If the graphics card keeps the monitor at 4k and performs upscaling itself, all colors look the same, without the mentioned problem. This makes me believe that the problem
might be in the Nvidia settings somewhere. However, I have absolutely no idea where.

The ability to have coloured title bars was introduced with the 10.0.586 version so that will explain why you are seeing the difference. Hopefully your enterprise edition at work will catch up with the update to the latest version but if it was only recently installed then there is a 30 day wait before the upgrade occurs.

Have a look through the tutorials on customisation to see what is possible.

Thanks, I did hear about these but I've had bad luck in past OS's with Aero because my screen elements (title bar fonts, message boxes, etc.) need to be large (my eyesight's poor) and I understood that Aero severely limits these sizes, and that it's a lot of work to restore them. Is that still the case? Also, I can't cope with transparency and Aero forces that, correct?

Simpler is the Aerolite theme (mentioned in this forum from early days).

Aeroglass and Aero (e.g. Win 7) are two different but somewhat related things. With Aeroglass you don't have to have any real transparency in fact if you wish. It also changes the minimise/restore down/exit buttons (to sthg I thing preferable and adds borders here and there if wished.

More generally you may find these settings of interest:

Here I've increased the titlebar size, but not the font. I don't know where that setting is offhand, never having had to use it. But note the magnification option (I've not applied the 125% scaling in that).

I also find a non-whitish background much easier: Qttabbar by Quizo lets you colour most of explorer, and a reg hack changes many other areas and backgrounds.

Well.. I logged off, on, and look at the title bar now:

Oooh I like! Will definitely give these a look. Especially heartening to hear about added borders -- the hairline defaults make me sad. Thank you!

Dalchina, thank you so VERY much for these tips. I can finally see what I need to, drag borders without squinting, and as an unexpected bonus, edit the rather peculiar set of default colors with the mixer. (Heaven only knows why MS decided to hide that lifesaver!)

Good to hear MS has included sthg that helps.. some here have also used and adapted the high contrast themes if you have a look through customisation, but the options in general for adaptation are more limited in Win 10 than ever.
