How to: See if Hyper-V Virtual Machine is Generation 1 or Generation 2

How to See if Hyper-V Virtual Machine is Generation 1 or Generation 2

Hyper-V enables running virtualized computer systems on top of a physical host. These virtualized systems (aka: guests) can be used and managed just as if they were physical computer systems, however they exist in a virtualized and isolated environment.

When you create a new virtual machine (VM) in Hyper-V, you must choose the generation of this VM to be either generation 1 or generation 2.
*Arrow Generation 1 (MBR / Legacy BIOS) = This virtual machine generation supports 32-bit and 64-bit guest operating systems and provides virtual hardware which has been available in all previous versions of Hyper-V.

*Arrow Generation 2 (GPT / UEFI) = This virtual machine generation provides support for newer virtualization features listed below, and requires 64-bit guest operating system.
    • PXE boot by using a standard network adapter
    • Boot from a SCSI virtual hard disk
    • Boot from a SCSI virtual DVD
    • Secure Boot (enabled by default)
    • UEFI firmware support
Once a virtual machine has been created, you cannot change its generation.

This tutorial will show you how to quickly see if your Hyper-V virtual machines are generation 1 or generation 2.

OPTION ONE [/i] To See Generation of Hyper-V Virtual Machine in Hyper-V Manager
    1. Open Hyper-V Manager.

    2. Select a Hyper-V virtual machine at the top of the middle pane you want to see what generation it is. (see screenshots below)

*note It doesn't matter if the virtual machine is off or running.

    3. You will now see what generation this Hyper-V virtual machine is at the bottom of the middle pane.

OPTION TWO [/i] To See Generation of All Hyper-V Virtual Machines in PowerShell
    1. Open an elevated PowerShell.

    2. Copy and paste the command below into the elevated PowerShell, and press Enter. (see screenshot below)
    *Arrow get-vm | format-list Name,Generation

    3. You will now see all your Hyper-V virtual machines listed by name with what generation they are.

Where is the Hyper V Manager, How to I start it ?

I am trying to setup an XP virtual Machine on Windows 10 Pro.

I followed the steps in Neil Peterson article of 5/9/2016.

System Requirements - done - ok

    Install Hyper-V - done - ok

Create a Virtual Switch - skip

    Create a Virtual Machine

Create a Virtual Machine with Hyper-V Manager

These steps walk through how to manually create a virtual machine and deploy an operating system to this virtual machine.

    • In Hyper-V Manager, click Action > New >
      Virtual Machine
      to bring up the New

Uhhhhhhhhh - this step obviously implies one knows

    1) Where the Hyper-V Manager is

    2) How to start the Hyper-V Manager

    Isn't that odd ?

    Hyper-V Virtual Machine not recognised

You have to create a VM before you can import it.

Basically once you created a VM then you can export it and clone it to create more VMs by importing.

But the thing is you have to create a fresh one first.

Here is what I do from hyper-v

    Open Hyper-v

Under Actions click New Virtual Machine.

    Click Next

Name it what you want. For example if this a windows 10 vm you can call it Windows10

Also if you have an extra partition on your drive that is not your C drive store it there but you will need at least 30GB of free space.

Click Next - Generation 1 is usually what i use for Windows 10 VMs

Click Next - for the startup memory leave it 1024MB you can change that if you have to later

Click Next - Choose your Network

Click Next - Now this is the part where you create a VHD you will need at least 20GB for windows operating system

Click Next - You will need an iso image of Windows from here you can select where it is

    Click Next

    Click Finish

Once it creates just connect to it and start and then it will boot to the iso and start installing Windows.

This link talks about the networks (virtual switches)
