How to Turn On or Off Recycle Bin Delete Confirmation in Windows 10

The Recycle Bin provides a safety net when deleting files or folders. When you delete any of these items from your hard disk, Windows places it in the Recycle Bin and the Recycle Bin icon changes from empty to full.

If you have multiple hard drives, partitions, or an external hard drive connected to your PC, each location will have its own $Recycle.Bin and Recycle Bin settings. Removable drives, such as USB flash drives and memory cards, will not have a Recycle Bin. Files deleted from removable drives are permanently deleted.

If you don't want to receive a delete confirmation dialog message each time you move a file or folder to the Recycle Bin, you can choose to not get the messages.

If you delete a file or folder that's larger than the set maximum storage size of the Recycle Bin, then you will always get a This file is too big to recycle. Do you want to permanently delete it? confirmation message like below.

If you empty the Recycle Bin, you will always get a Are you sure you want to permanently delete...? confirmation dialog like below.

Permanently delete confirmation pops up even though disabled in Recycle Bin properties

    Hi,

To better assist you regarding your concern, we would like to ask some questions:

    • Are you referring to deleting the file inside the recycle bin?
    • Are you referring to deleting the file outside the recycle bin using
      SHIFT key + Delete
      ?

Deleting files inside the recycle bin always asks for a confirmation prompt. It is the normal behavior of the recycle bin. And if you are trying to delete the files outside the recycle bin using using
SHIFT key + Delete it will also ask for a confirmation prompt because the files you are trying to delete will be permanently deleted and will no longer be stored in your recycle bin.

Let us know how it goes.

Turn On or Off Recycle Bin Delete Confirmation in Windows 10

    Hello @Pietcorus, *Smile

This delete confirmation is for when you delete an item for it to go into the Recycle Bin instead.

If you empty the Recycle Bin, you will always get a "Are you sure you want to permanently delete...?" confirmation dialog.

I think this confirmation should always remain. It is the last line of defence to stop losing file permanently without having to use specialist tools. On many occasions, I have gone to empty bin but warning has made me think "maybe not".

I am more cavalier about deleting files to the bin as I know I can get them back quickly if I screw up (as we all do). Of course, good old Macrium images are my fallback but more hassle.

I agree. Otherwise, it'll be way too easy to permanently delete something by mistake.

If it can be useful, I have tried to enable deletion confirmation with this registry key and it works, so that it is effective to run it is required to reboot.

    Enable confirms file deletion

    Thank you DMD.

The values for that will vary depending on the selected drive, and will not always be the same everyone. *Sad

The key only affects the current user, but I have verified that the selection remains active even on other HDDs.
If you want you can try to give a confirmation.

    Thank you

I tested it on a few of my other systems, and the data value for "ShellState" varied on all of them. In addition, "ShellState" includes other settings than this one.

If you have another PC to test on, you'll notice the data value will not be the same.

This would be fine to export and import for a specific PC, but it just wouldn't be good to import on all systems. *Sad

    Thank you for your confirmation.
A better solution is to act through the policy command
Value "1" On and value "0" off

    Code: @echo off reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer" /v "ConfirmFileDelete" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f taskkill /im explorer.exe /f & explorer.exe exit[/quote]
