Windows 10: Win10 Home - "Another user on this device uses this Microsoft account"

64-bit PC running Windows 10 Home. We use Microsoft Family features so linking our User accounts to our Microsoft accounts is critical. My daughter deleted our user accounts and created her own local account. I'm now trying to correct what she did back to the way it was.


I deleted her errant local account. Created a new local account for myself with admin rights. Created a new local account for her set to Standard User. But, when I try to link the Local accounts to their respective Microsoft accounts, I get an error "Another user on this device uses this Microsoft account, so you can't add it here."

-I've tried adjustments to Local Security Policy

-I've removed 1 user (hers) from Group Policy Editor

-I've removed the computer from our accounts on Microsoft.com

-I've unlinked the device from the store

-I've looked in Computer Management and found no additional users there

-I've looked in PC properties > User Settings and found nothing there

-There are no StoredIdentities in the Registry

-I've even edited the Registry to remove all instances of the related MS account email addresses


I'm at the end of my rope. Only thing I can think to do at this point is a full wipe and reinstall of windows which I'd very much like to avoid. Anyone have any suggestions?

Adding a Device to Microsoft Account Requires a MS Account User

I noticed that my newer Windows 10 computer had not been added to my list of devices on my Microsoft Account so I attempted to add it, only to find out that apparently the computer must be logged in to a Microsoft account user in order to do this. I only have local accounts set up on my computers and I don't particularly want a Microsoft account user set up as I will never use it. With the latest Win10 versions apparently Microsoft wants all computers to have a Microsoft account user set up as they make it very difficult to set up a local user as the first account. Does anyone have any way around this? I am not sure what listing this device on your account buys you.

Settings can't be opened using the built-in administrator account

Unfortunately I have the same issue as Dabz from upgrading win7 to win10.
I've tried opening settings using all the suggested methods and it will not load using my account with Administrator access nor the built-in Administrator profile. I also tried other methods not listed such as using Run. Control panel is just a stepping stone to add users in Settings.
I'm also having explorer.exe issues, which I believe is preventing Settings from loading.
Using cmd (Admin) I successfully created a new user profile [and granted admin access also using cmd (Admin)], however win10 will not allow this account to log on. win10 does not list this new user within control panel but it does in the start menu. win10 will not allow to log in or switch to the new account via the start menu either.
I can access settings in Safe Mode but this will not allow me to create a new account.
Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Unknown devices on my Microsoft account

Could these other devices be from friends that you may have signed in to your Microsoft account on for something?

Either way, you can remove these devices.

Afterwards to be safe, I would recommend to change the password of your Microsoft account, and enable two-step verification if you haven't already.
