How to Remove Devices from your Microsoft Account

A Microsoft account is what you use to sign in to Microsoft services such as outlook.com (or Hotmail), Office, OneDrive, Skype, Xbox, Windows, and more. It makes your experiences on devices and services more personal and relevant to you.

Any device (ex: PC, phone, tablet, laptop, Xbox, etc...) that you signed in to with your Microsoft account will be associated with your Microsoft account, and listed under "Your devices" online until you remove the device.

You can find your PC, see status, get apps, get info, and get support for your devices.

You would want to remove a device from your Microsoft account after you no longer have it anymore.

This tutorial will show you how to remove a Xbox One, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, or Windows 10 Mobile device from your Microsoft account.

    Here's How:

1 Go to the Devices page online for your Microsoft account, and sign in if you are not already.

2 Click/tap on the Manage or Show details link under the device you want to remove from your Microsoft account. (see screenshot below)

3 Click/tap on the More actions link, and click/tap on Remove PC, Remove laptop, Unlink this phone, or Remove Xbox depending on the device. (see screenshots below)

4 Check the I'm ready to remove this device box, and click/tap on Remove. (see screenshot below)

5 The device has now been removed from being associated with your Microsoft account. Click/tap on OK. (see screenshots below)

6 It is now recommended to reset your device to remove your Microsoft account and any personal information from it.
7 When you remove a device from your Microsoft account, the device will still be associated with the Store for getting apps and games. The Store has a limit of 10 associated devices. If you like, you may also wish to remove the device from your Store account.

    That's it,
    Shawn

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that you are facing issues while removing the device from your Microsoft account as it keeps popping back after removing.

It could be possible that the device was using OneDrive with the same Microsoft account and that might be the reason you are able to see the device listed under your profile. I would suggest you to remove the device from OneDrive
    and see if that helps.

Unknown devices on my Microsoft account

Hello Flemmingk, Microsoft Account - Remove Devices :)

Could these other devices be from friends that you may have signed in to your Microsoft account on for something?

Either way, you can remove these devices.

Afterwards to be safe, I would recommend to change the password of your Microsoft account, and enable two-step verification if you haven't already.

Issue removing the phantom device from Microsoft Account

    Hi W33EES,

Thank you for posting your concern on Microsoft Answer Community.

Any device that you sign-in with your Microsoft account will be associated with your Microsoft account, and listed under "Your devices" online until you remove the device.

I suggest you to sign into Windows 10 using your Microsoft account and other Microsoft devices, those devices become associated with your account. If you want to remove an old device you’ve gotten rid of, you’ll have to pay a visit to Microsoft’s account
web site. Follow the below steps to remove from Microsoft Account, check if that helps.

Method: Remove Devices from Your Microsoft Account.

    1. On your web browser, log into your
      Login.live.com
      .
    2. On the top-right corner, you will find a menu named ‘Devices‘. Click on it to further expand it, and then choose ‘Your Devices‘.
    3. On this page, you will directly have access to all of your linked devices to your Microsoft Account.
    4. There will be quite a few info about your linked devices.
    5. Select the option Remove Device.
    6. Select the “I’m ready to remove this device” check box and then click
      Remove.
    7. A confirmation page shows you what device you removed and the exact time and date. Click Back to Devices.

Removing devices helps ensure that that old devices you no longer use are not capable of accessing your account and that you don’t run into the ten-device limit for installed apps and games. Check if that works.

    We await your response.
