Windows 10 starting computer late in the night

My windows 10 system is starting up late in the night, probably to install updates and this is driving me insane as when I wake up in the morning , I realize that the system was automatically switched for several hours. In the Windows 10 anniversary update, I specifically set the active hours from 9PM to 9AM hoping that windows will believe that I use computer at those hours and would not turn on my system and update it but it did it again. This is insane. How do I tell windows to install updates as soon as it downloads them? Or atleast give me a popup which asks me when to install the update? I really don't like it when my system starts in the middle of the night. Could somebody please help ?

    :)

BTW on the economics front. Everything that the military uses has to be certified. You can't just change out things willy nilly. This is a lengthy, expensive process. Not to mention the changing of documentation, and training procedures, and the actual
    training.

LOL I have assume that you are either joking or have no clue on how these kind of things work.

The US Navy isn't staying on Windows XP for these systems, and paying for support because it feels that Windows XP is better than any other version of Windows. They are doing it because upgrading they most likely "stuck".

The "stuck" will be either in economic (it costs less to stay with Windows XP than upgrade, and they would have to get the funding) or more likely there is something that they can't upgrade because of hardware/software that isn't supported on the newer versions
    of Windows.

I can give a couple examples of such problems from my career.

    1) While in the Air Force from 1975 to 1981, I worked on machines made in the Korea war time frame. Reason they supported the A7-D that was created in that time frame, and they were still flying the A7-D at the time.

    2) GE Medical modified the kernel of a Sun 3 Unix computer years ago for use with their scanner. This computer had a 68020 processor. When they Sun 4 computer came out with the Sparc processor they couldn't use it because of their modifications. They
ended up paying an India company to have Sun 3 computers built after Sun obsoleted them.

In the world of very expensive machines, or large volume, lots of times you are in a corner, and you just do what you have to. It is not a reflection on a "belief".

    Hi Brink,

My PC again started last night by itself. This time I was able to follow the instructions that you gave but unfortunately there was no evidence of what woke the PC up.
The powershell command to find the last wake source, gave the wake source count as 0. Similarly there was no entry in the event log too. The only entry which I could see waas, the system resumed from sleep. I do know that the system was downloading updates before I shutdown the system. But , please help, I don't want the system to wake up automatically in the middle of the night *cry

Did it have any other information from the command prompt like in my screenshot in the tutorial?

Was it around 2 AM when the computer woke up? If so, it could be the automatic maintenance schedule.

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/...dows-10-a.html

As a test, disable "Allow wake timers" to see if it may be a scheduled wake timer responsible if it doesn't wake up anymore afterwards.

In addition, check to see what devices are able to wake up the computer, and disable all but the one you need (ex: mouse or keyboard) to rule them out.

One option is to actually power OFF the PC instead of putting it in standby/hibernation mode.

    Hi Brink,

No, no other information,Wake history count -1Wake history[0]Wake source count - 0The system started at 10PM despite setting active hours option from 9PM to 9AM.The allow scheduled tasks to wake my computer was already set to off.The allow wake timers option in power options was also offI could see that in addtion to mouse and keyboard, network adapter was set to power on the system(powercfg -devicequery wake_armed).I've disabled it now.Any other things or way to prevent the system from starting would be helpful

You could look in task scheduler to see if there are any entries set late at night.

  11. Long shot but check your NIC's (wired, wireless) in device manager. Under properties there should be a Power Mgmt tab. Uncheck wake on lan.
