How to Check if your PC supports Windows Mixed Reality in Windows 10

Virtual Reality shields the user from the real physical world, while delivering an immersive virtual world. Augmented Reality doesnt block users from the real world, hence the experience is not as immersive.

Mixed Reality (previously called "Windows Holographic") blends virtual and augmented reality into hybrid environments where physical and digital objects coexist and interact. It is a platform in Windows 10 designed to power a range of VR and AR devices, which includes the HoloLens.

Starting with Windows 10 build 17686, several improvements have been included for Windows Mixed Reality users:
    • This build no longer requires a physical monitor to be connected while running Mixed Reality in cases such as backpack PCs. Setting up WMR for the first time in Mixed Reality Portal and unlocking the PC on the sign in screen still, require a monitor to be connected initially. However, you can configure auto login to prevent needing to sign in for subsequent usage here. Using Windows Mixed Reality while standing requires setting up a room boundary.
    • Apps running in Windows Mixed Reality can now make use of the Camera Capture UI API to capture images of the mixed reality world using the system capture experience. Try running Mail in the Cliff House and inserting an image from your camera in a new message to share an image of the scenic view.
    • Microsoft also made some adjustments to the mixed reality video capture experience in this build to make it easier to stop videos from the Start menu.
This tutorial will show you how to check if your Windows 10 PC supports Windows Mixed Reality.

Opening the windows mixed reality portal freezes my pc

    Hi OPretzel,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community forums.

    • What is the make and model of your PC?
    • Do you see any error code/message upon PC freeze?
    • Are you aware of any changes that happened on the PC prior to this issue?

I suggest you to try the methods listed below and check if it works for you:

    Method 1

    Check for Updates:

One of the possible reasons for Windows Mixed Reality not working correctly is the outdated software. I suggest you to check if there are any pending updates and ensure your Windows 10 is up to date. Refer
Update Windows 10, to know how to check for updates.

    Method 2

    Update Firmware:

    • Right click the Windows icon on the taskbar and choose
      Device Manager
      .
    • Expand Mixed Reality Devices, right click the headset device, and choose
      Update Driver.
    • Restart the machine, and open Mixed Reality portal to see if the issue persists.

    Method 3

Uninstall and Reinstall Windows Mixed Reality:

    • Go to Settings >
      Mixed reality > Uninstall
      and select Uninstall.
    • Restart your computer. To start the setup process again, just plug your headset into your PC.

For more troubleshooting tips on Windows Mixed Reality, refer
    Troubleshooting Windows Mixed Reality.

If the issue persists, check the Applications and System Event Logs in Windows (using Event Viewer) and let us know what the logs say at the time of crash.

Check if your PC supports Windows Mixed Reality in Windows 10

Windows 10 Build 15048 Brings Mixed Reality Support and Demo

The latest Insider build of Windows 10 (Build 15048 for the curious) appeared at first to be a simple bugfix release. But hidden inside was a neat little gem for Mixed Reality developers: Support for the technology complete with a demo.

For most of us, this means little. Attempting to run the demo without a pricey Mixed Reality developers kit will only unlock a simulation of the demo, not an actual Mixed Reality experience. You will also need to enable "Developers Mode" on Windows 10's settings panel to enable the "Mixed Reality Portal" that leads to the demo in the first place.

If you've done all that developer mode prerequisite black magic, and are running the right build (15048) you should find the "Windows Mixed Reality" app in the start menu. Inside, you can test whether your PC is ready for Mixed Reality (probably the most interesting feature to the average user at this point), run the simulation, or if you are in possession of the proper hardware, actually run the demo in actual Mixed Reality.

The "Windows Mixed Reality" portal app seems to completely replace any reference to the older Microsoft "HoloLens" technology.

    4. Are you getting any specific error messages when setting up the Mixed Reality Controllers?
    5. What is the make and model of your computer?

Upon researching, it was stated in this article that KB4284848 "Addresses a performance issue with Windows Mixed Reality on some laptops with hybrid graphics adapters, such as Surface Book 2".
If you're using a laptop that supports hybrid graphics adapters, then its advisable to install the said KB update.

  6. BlueSoliel Bluetooth not working with windows mixed reality.

    Hi Shuken,

Software incompatibility and outdated driver are some of the possible reasons why you are experiencing an issue with using the Bluetooth feature of your Windows 10. To provide an accurate solution, I would need you to answer the following questions:

    • Which build and edition of Windows 10 is currently installed on your PC?
    • What changes were made to the device before this issue occurred?
    • Were you able to use the Bluetooth software before this issue happened?

For initial troubleshooting, I suggest that you follow the steps provided by
