Windows 10: Unable to customize Start menu

Hello everyone. I am trying to customize my Start menu but am unable to do so. Can anyone tell me how to do this? Thank you!

Please check to see if Tablet mode is enabled in your action center (icon before time and date). If it's enabled, kindly disable it by clicking the icon.

Unable to customize Start Menu

I don't know how or what caused it, but I can't customize my start menu.

I cannot drag and drop items on it, or resize tiles, create groups or rename existing groups.

Right click only provides the "more" option, and no resize or "pin to taskbar".

The "Show more tiles" option is disabled in Start settings, and it says at the top "some settings are controlled by your organization" when I'm not part of any organization. I'm also running as administrator.

I have run virus and malware scans and nothing suspicious was found.

sfc scan in powershell didn't find any issues either.

I have tried a clean boot, as well as a new user profile, and the issue persists on both.

Help please.

Also, make sure your install is activated
Settings > Update & Security > Activation

 

Thank you for your reply. I have Windows 10 Home and am activated. I understand that if I right-click on an empty space and then choose "Properties" there is supposed to be a tab for personalizing the Start Menu on "Tool Bar and Start Menu Properties" but it is not there. There also is no way to do it in "Settings" > "Personalization"

Could this all be because I have "Home" rather then "Pro".

 

Are you sure there's not anything in
Settings > Personalization > Start ?



I just checked my Win7 system (upgraded to Home) and it is there.

Please post a screen shot from your system similar to the one above
Seeing what you see always helps members on this side of your monitor.

Also, be as specific as you can on what you want to change. Maybe if you do one at a time, it might help get you started ... some things are in different settings.

Thank you for your reply. What I am trying to do is modify the start menu (changing its colour scheme). When I right-click on an empty part of the task bar a window comes up like the one here. One tab (Start Menu) is missing and it is the one I require in order to change the colour scheme. It (the Start Menu tab) is present on my other system that has Pro installed. Can anyone who has Home installed tell me if they have it? And if they do suggest why I do not? Thanks

 

I have home on another machine. Neither Home or Pro has the Taskbar Properties Start Menu tab.

You're not looking in the right place. Forget about the way you used to do it and use the way to do it in Win10 *Wink

Press the WinKey [ *Start ] to open Start
Press Settings in the left hand panel
Press Personalization
Press colors

This might make it a bit easier while learning Win10

Things are different in Win10 lots of stuff has moved to Settings - after you told me what you wanted to do, it was easy to find the tutorials.

If you bump into another issue where you can't find the way to do something, search the Tutorial Quick Reference (index) too

 

Doing what you have suggested, Slartybart, only allows me to change the background colour of the entire screen. I need that "Start Menu" tab in order to just change the colour of the Start Menu.

 

Sorry, the Taskbar properties > Start Menu tab just isn't part of Windows 10.

Thanks a lot Slartybart - I have it figured out with your help. Too bad the selection of colours is so limited and there are no custom colours.

 

Hi guys , why can't i pin apps to start menu ? I tried drag and drop but it didn't work.

 

You're welcome. Yes, many people say the same thing about the limited color choices.

Here's a zip file that has two shortcuts to color options (the Win8.1 style)
Dbl click the zip file, then press the Compressed folder tools - extract tab - extract all

The choices are better than what Win10 currently offers, but lacks the granularity that Win7 offered
(no custom colors, no HTML color ff0000 = red)
