Information In Windows 10, you can easily save your files to OneDrive and get to them from any device, like your PC, tablet, or phone.

OneDrive is free online storage at OneDrive.com that comes with your Microsoft account. It’s like an extra hard drive that’s available from any of the devices you use. You no longer need to email files to yourself or carry around (and possibly lose) a USB flash drive. Instead, whether you’re on your laptop and working on a presentation, viewing photos from your last family vacation on your new tablet, or on your phone reviewing your shopping list, you can get to your files in OneDrive.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the OneDrive desktop icon for your account in Windows 10.

    EXAMPLE: OneDrive desktop icon

    7. Refresh (F5) your desktop to apply.

    8. You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

    That's it,
    Shawn

    Hello Gary, *Smile

You could, but it would just be a normal shortcut instead of an official OneDrive desktop icon.

  5. I have done this and the icon is the OneDrive cloud Icon, just with the Shortcut arrow overlaying it - no big deal *Smile

I used the Registry edited recommended to remove the icon, but it did not work. I've rebooted my system multiple times and refreshed the desktop, but no luck. I enjoy using OneDrive, I just prefer to access it through File Explorer rather than from the desktop. Dragging the icon to the trash results in deleting the entire contents of OneDrive, which is not what I want.

Any idea why the recommended registry edit doesn't work? Has anyone been successful using this recently?

    Hello pcraven, *Smile

I just tested again, and it's still working fine for me in build 14316.

Did you do anything else involving OneDrive?

Are you still able to open your OneDrive folder?

Brink, I very much appreciate your testing again!
I'm running Windows 10 Pro Build 10586. I have a OneDrive personal and a OneDrive business link setup. I believe I had to run a registry edit to enable the "Add a business account" option under OneDrive account settings. I think the new OneDrive business sync client is the same or essentially the same as the personal sync client, and the business option wasn't enabled by default. I'm trying to track down where Microsoft listed those steps, but I can't find it. I'm guessing that having both Personal and Business might be interfering with the method you posted?

I wouldn't think that would be an issue since this is just a link to open your personal OneDrive folder.

As a test, create a shortcut using the target below to see if it opens OneDrive for you. It uses the same GUID as what this tutorial uses.

    explorer.exe shell:::{018D5C66-4533-4307-9B53-224DE2ED1FE6}

I created the shortcut, and it does open my Personal OneDrive location.

In that case, go ahead and export the registry keys below and upload them in a post here to see what may be wrong.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons

I'm attempting to attach the two registry keys

    CurrentUser_HideDesktopIcons.reg

    LocalMachine_HideDesktopIcons.reg

I don't see anything wrong. The .reg file from step 2 was successfully merged, so you should have the OneDrive desktop icon after refreshing (F5) your desktop.

If you like, see if the .reg file below may help. It'll also add the same entry to the HKLM key.

    Add_OneDrive_Desktop_Icon.reg
