Windows 10: Is CU now being forced on my system?

This can be stopped in WU/Advanced options.

 

What can be stopped--Recovery Partition? I don't see anything in Advanced options.

 

FYI, it updated just fine but where did they put SEARCH and Control Panel and Command Prompt Admin? I do not have sound, but will see if speaker unplugged. Has anyone else had sound go away when doing the CU update?

Thank You, I did a search and a lot came up but no answers.
OK...I will look. Why couldn't they leave it alone. I need to look at sound as well, but perhaps the speaker pug came loose as I had not heard of anyone having issues with audio going away with the CU update.

Thank You...but this is strange. I unplugged the speakers and when I plugged them back in my Realtek poped up and asked what I just plugged in. I then shut down , as I did not select anything and it would not let me continue. Now all is working and I even have my items back on Win-X!

 

The option to update to the CU appeared on my homebuilt desktop yesterday. Is it curently more reliable to upgade via Windows Update or using the ISO file fom the Media Creation Tool or using the HeiDoc.net Tool https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/techno...-tool?showall= ?

Irritations to sort out seem to be:

• Need to use the .reg files on the forum to set font sizes
• Need to install a shortcut to obtain the Control Panel
• Yet another recovery partition is installed so need to consider deleting the old ones and extending the partition

Is the above correct and are there any other irritations for advanced users to sort out?

 

Hi,
1. Make sure you have a current disk image before upgrading.
2. A bootable Win 10 disk is always a good thing to have - for repairs, reinstalling, 2nd attempt.. or at least the iso.
3. If you update via Windows update, you don't have an iso, so if you wanted one you'd have to repeat the download. Same if the upgrade fails and you need to try again.
4. Don't manually intervene as far as the recovery partition is concerned- simply make sure you've over 500Mb unallocated on your disk and let Windows handle that.
5. Observe the usual precautions for a Win 10 upgrade (see tutorial notes).

Detail:
You don't need to create a shortcut for the control panel unless you want to. Typing Contro in Cortana's search bar should work.
(I would think that those who use Classic Shell as their start menu wouldn't have to worry about that)

Access to the command prompt (if you think you need it) is similarly quite feasible (Powershell replaces that on the Win X menu I understand- but it seems you can use command prompt commands in the Powershell box anyway).

Update control - defer feature upgrades and notify to download- check these are set or set them as you wish.

Enable system restore if so desired.

2. If you click on 'Windows System' in the Start Menu, one of the options is Control Panel. If you right-click on that, you can pin it to the Task Bar. Not sure where you want it; maybe you can move it from there to the tile part of the Start Menu box, whatever that's called.

3. Somebody mentioned the Recovery Partition issue in a previous post. I don't know anything about this stuff and asked for a clarification, but he didn't respond. If you could explain this and how to delete anything in this regard that we don't really need and free up space, I would appreciate it.

Thanks for the tips in posts 22 & 23. I'll use the ISO file to upgrade. The ISO file from HeiDoc.net at https://heidoc.net/joomla/technology...-download-tool has install.wim and the ISO from the Media Creation Tool has install.esd. The ISO having install.wim seems the better one to use since advice on the forum indicates the .wim file is easier to use in case of problems.

I didn't realise the command prompt has been deprecated.

You can use the command reagentc /info to find the active recovery partition. Then use MiniTool Partition Wizard to peruse the contents of the recovery partitions. The old ones (I will have two) can then be deleted and the main partition extended to recover the space freed. It's only worth doing this if you are desperate to recover c. 0.5 - 1.0 GB disk space.

 

Simplest advice is to leave at least 500Mb unallocated space on your system disk.

If you don't, and there's free space on another disk, you can end up with a new recovery partition on a different disk. You don't want that.

 

Another issue people have encountered is having Visual Studio installed causing the upgrade to fail. Best to uninstall it.
