How to Add or Remove "Lid close action" from Power Options in Windows

The Power Options lets users specify the default action to take when the laptop (system) lid is closed.

Users can specify one of the following actions to take: do nothing, sleep, hibernate, or shut down.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the Lid close action setting under Power buttons and lid in Power Options for all users in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

*Warning You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to add or remove this setting in Power Options.

*note This will not affect the When I close the lid setting in Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do (System Settings) below.

Power options and action for a lid, sleep, turn off

@stashek, you shouldn't need to look in the registry, you should be able to find all that in the Control Panel.

Look at Control Panel > Power options and click 'Choose what the power button does' or 'Choose what closing the lid does' from the list near the top at the left.

Waking and Powering on laptop with lid close

    Hi,

Closing the lid can result in your Windows shutting down, sleeping or hibernating. You can control the behavior and decide what you want to do, once you close the lid. To assist you with your concern, we recommend that you follow these steps on how
to configure the power option of your device if you want to keep your laptop running even with the lid closed:

    • In the Search box, type powercfg.cpl and press
Enter. This will open the Power Options applet of the Control Panel.
    • Now, in the Power Options window, click Choose what closing the lid
does link from the left pane.

    • Choose what you want your laptop to do, when it’s running on battery and when it’s plugged in. For instance, under Power button and lid settings section you can find ‘When I Close the Lid’ option. Adjacent to it you can find options to help you define
power button or lid settings. Once you've selected your options, click Save
      changes button.

  6. Laptop keeps restarting after going to sleep (when the lid is closed).

    Hi Craig,

It's possible that your lid close action is configured to shut down your computer. To make sure your settings are properly configured, you can refer to the steps below:

    • Right-click on the Start menu, then choose Control
      Panel.
    • Change the View by: option on the upper-right-part of the screen to Small icons.
    • Choose Power Options.
    • Select your power plan (e.g. High Performance), then choose Change plan settings.
    • Click Change advanced power settings.
    • Go to Sleep settings, then disable hybrid sleep.
    • Under Power Buttons and Lid, check if
Sleep is chosen as action when lid is close.
    • Hit Apply and OK.

If the lid close action is set to Sleep, we suggest checking if your drivers are up-to-date. When it comes to sleep mode issues, the driver related are network, chipset, and BIOS drivers. To update your drivers, you can refer to this

    link
    .

We look forward to your response.
