How to: See What User a Process is Running As in Windows 10

Information A process is an instance of a program that is being executed. Each process running in Windows is assigned a unique decimal number called the process ID, or PID.

Run as different user allows a user to run .bat, .cmd, .exe, .msc, and .msi files with different permissions than the user's current logon provides.

Run as different user will only affect the current instance of the running .bat, .cmd, .exe, .msc, or .msi file. You can open multiple instances of the file with each instance running as a different user.

This tutorial will show you how to see what user name a process is running as with that user's permissions in Windows 10.

    Here's How:

    1. Open Task Manager in more details view.

    2. Do step 3 or step 4 below for how you would like to see what user a process is running as.

    3. In the Processes tab, right click or press and hold on a process (ex: Notepad), click/tap on Go to details, and go to step 4 below. (see screenshot below)

    4. In the Details tab, you will see the user (ex: Test) listed in the User name column for the process name (ex: notepad.exe). The process (ex: notepad.exe) is running using the permissions of this user (ex: Test).

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

  5. Task Manager not showing processes, running apps and users.

We would like to know more in regards with your concern, can you provide some details before this issue occurred?

    • What is the exact build and version of your Windows operating system?
    • Is your computer up to date? If not, click here to check for latest updates.
    • Are you getting any error message?

For the time being, we suggest you follow the steps below on how to run SFC – System File Checker to help you scan your system files and to repair missing or corrupted system files.

    • Press Windows Key + X.
    • Click Command Prompt (Admin)
    • Type SFC/scannow then hit enter to execute the command.
    • Reboot the PC for the changes to take effect.

For us to isolate the issue, I would recommend you create a new local account, backup your files in the old account and then copy them over to the new account. Check if that works.

Your response to the resolution will be highly appreciated.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

As you may already know, Windows 10 (as well as Windows 8) allow you to log in with a valid Microsoft account, instead of creating a local account that only works on your machine. However, you may prefer to keep a local account for privacy reasons. If you do, though, some Windows 10 features—like Cortana—may not work. Despite the default behavior, the Windows 10 Store is not one of them. You can still log in to your Microsoft account for just the Store without switching to a full Microsoft account. The process, however, is not terribly obvious. To do so, follow these steps:

    • Launch the Store from your Start menu.
    • Click the user icon next to the search box.
    • Click “Sign-in” from the menu that appears.
    • Choose “Microsoft account” and log in like normal.
    • When the “Make it yours” box appears do not enter your password. Instead, click “Sign in to just this app instead.”
