How to Generate Battery Usage Report in Windows 10

A battery usage report will help you know more about the usage, health, and life estimates characteristics of your PC's battery over the lifetime of the system.

This tutorial will show you how to generate a detailed battery usage report for your Windows 10 PC (ex: laptop, Surface, or tablet) that runs on a battery.

*tip Battery saving tips - Microsoft Support

    Here's How:

    1. Open a command prompt.

    2. Type the command below to have the battery report as a .html (recommended) or .xml file, and press Enter. (see screenshot below)
    (For .html file.)
    *Arrow powercfg /batteryreport /output %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\battery_report.html /Duration days

    OR

    (For .xml file)
    *Arrow powercfg /batteryreport /output %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\battery_report.xml /XML /Duration days

*note Substitute days in the commands above with a number 1 to 14 to specify the number of days you want to analyze for the report.

    3. Double click/tap on the say battery_report.html file on your desktop to open and see your battery usage report in your default web browser (ex: Internet Explorer).

    4. This is a copy of my laptop's battery usage report from a battery_report.html file viewed in Internet Explorer as an example of what is reported. (see screenshots below)

The top of the battery usage report will give you general information about your PC as well as if your PC supports connected standby or not.

The Installed batteries section below gives you detailed information about the battery including the name, serial number, and manufacturer.
    • Chemistry = Usually will be LION for Lithium-ion battery.
    • Design Capacity = The amount of charge that the battery was designed to hold in mWh (milliwatt hours).
    • Full Charge Capacity = The amount of charge that the battery will actually hold.
    • Cycle Count = The number of times that the battery has used up 100% of its charge and then recharged, or the result of discharging to 50%, charging to full, then discharging to 50% again. Batteries have a limited amount of cycles to work through before they are considered consumed.

The Recent usage section below lists the power states (active or suspended) that your system has gone through over the last specified days (ex: 3 days). You will also see if the power "source" was AC or battery, and the remaining capacity shown as a percentage and mWh.

The Battery usage section below shows you the date and time in a chart and table for each instance when the battery was drained over the last specified days (ex: 3 days).

The Usage history section below show you the history of system usage on AC and battery power.

The Battery capacity history section below shows you the charge capacity history of the system's batteries. It compares the "Full Charge Capacity" with the "Design Capacity" over a period of time.

The Battery life estimates section below will help indicate how long you can expect the battery to last at a "full charge capacity" and at "design capacity" based on the observed drains.

Is there a way to reset this report?

The reason why I ask, is lately my report is off, like way off. When it used to give me realistic battery life results it was around 10 to 11 hours. Now it's showing 149000 hours!?!?

Any suggestions or recommendations would be appreciated.

    Cheers!

    Hello radar, *Smile

That's some great battery life you have there.

The report is a newly generated report each time it's ran, so there's no need to try and reset it.

If able, you could see if removing the battery, and pressing the power button while also unplugged from AC to discharge may help the next time you run the report.

You might also double check to make sure that you have all of the latest drivers installed for your PC and devices to see if that may help.

I get this when running powercfg /batteryreport
Unable to perform operation. An unexpected error (0x10d2) has occurred: The library, drive, or media is empty.

So one of the files trying to be copied is corrupted?

Thank you in advance for assistance.

    Hello dogpark, *Smile

That's a normal error when you run the command without having it outputted to a .html or .xml file.

You'll just need to run the full command in step 2 instead.

Generate Battery Usage Report in Windows 10

    Hi Brink,
Sorry, should have stated that I did run the fully qualified commands in step 2 & they too received same msg.
Did get powercfg -energy -output energyreport.html to run tho. Gave me some battery info (the ID, chemistry, design capacity) & at the bottom indicates:
    Device Drivers:Analysis Success
Analysis was successful. No energy efficiency problems were found. No information was returned.

    Thank you

You could try running a Sleep Study report:

    powercfg /sleepstudy

I use this if I need to check what is causing a battery drain. I run it from the desktop as Admin so the report will be placed on the Desktop.

Odd. Go ahead and post a screenshot of the command prompt to see if anything may stand out.

Wasn't sure if this was good place to run sfc /scannow, DISM ScanHealth, RestoreHealth but I did anyway. ScanHealth came back with repairable msg, got a bit excited. However after RestoreHealth (successful) still no go with above cmd. The CBS/DISM logs are quite large to browse, no idea what to look for.

Powercfg / sleepstudy reports these over & over for the past three days. Normal I assume.

    dogpark,

It looks like you have one too many spaces after "/batteryreport" in the command. There should only be one space instead of two.

    powercfg /batteryreport /output %USERPROFILE%\Desktop\battery_report.html /Duration 3

This is copied straight from your post above. My search on "the library, drive or media pool is empty" keeps wanting to reference loading pictures by camera or phone to the PC, encounters a corrupt file & stops.
Am I missing something obvious? *Huh
