How to Determine if Running 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) Architecture of Windows 10


The terms 32-bit and 64-bit refer to the way a computer's processor (also called a CPU), handles information. The benefits of using a 64-bit operating system are most apparent when you have a large amount of random access memory (RAM) installed on your computer, typically 4 GB of RAM or more. The 64-bit version of Windows handles large amounts of random access memory (RAM) more effectively than a 32-bit system. To run a 64-bit version of Windows, your computer must have a 64-bit-capable processor.

This tutorial will show you how to determine if you are running a 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) architecture of Windows 10 on your PC.

*note You cannot clean install since you can only upgrade from 32-bit to 32-bit or 64-bit to 64-bit.

OPTION ONE [/i] To Determine 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 10 System Type in Settings
1. Open Settings, and click/tap on the System icon.

2. Click/tap on About on the left side. Under Device specifications on the right side, look to see if your System type is either a 64-bit operating system or a 32-bit operating system.









OPTION TWO [/i] To Determine 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 10 System Type in System
1. Do step 2, step 3, or step 4 below for how you would like to open the System window.

2. Press the Windows + Pause/Break keys, and go to step 5 below.

3. Open the step 5 below.

4. Open the step 5 below.

5. Look to see if your System type is either a 64-bit Operating System or a 32-bit Operating System.









OPTION THREE [/i] To Determine 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 10 System Type in System Information
1. Open your Start menu (Windows key), type msinfo32 in the search box, and press Enter.

2. In System Summary on the left side, look to see if your System Type on the right side is either a x64-based PC or a x86-based PC.









OPTION FOUR [/i] To Determine 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 10 System Type using systeminfo Command
1. Open a command prompt.

2. In the command prompt, type systeminfo, and press Enter.

3. Look to see if your System Type is either a x64-based PC or a x86-based PC.

How do I install IE 32 bit and/or switch from 64 bit to 32 bit?

Windows 10: Internet Explorer

• You need to have Windows 10 64-bit(x64) to use this feature
• To check:
  • Click on Windows Key
  • Click on Settings
  • Click on System
  • On left panel click on About
  • On right panel check system type:
    • System Type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
      • That means you have Windows 10 64-bit
    • System Type: 32-bit operating system, x86-based processor
      • That means you have Windows 10 32-bit
• Internet Explorer
  • 32-bit(x86):
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplorer.exe
  • 64-bit(x64):
    • C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplorer.exe

Note:

• You cannot switch between Windows 10 32-bit to 64-bit. you need to re-install Windows 10 64 bit.
• To download Windows 10 64-bit:

Why program files are listed as 32-bit (x86) while operating system is 64-bit in Windows 10

Hello. I'm a bit confused as to why my program files are listed as 32-bit (x86) while my system is 64-bit. It's listed as 64-bit under system settings however the x86 would lead me to believe otherwise. Any ideas? I

Hello,

Run msinfo32.exe command, if the architecture information displayed says x64, your system is 64-bit. If it mentions x86, system is 32-bit.
