How to Turn Taskbar Notification Area System Icons On or Off in Windows 10


System icons, including Clock, Volume, Network, Power, Input Indicator, and Action Center are located on the taskbar system tray (aka: notification area) by default. When you hover over these icons, you can see their status. You can right click on these icons to access specific options or settings for them.

You can also change how the icons and notifications appear to hide or show them. You might turn off a system icon if either you or your computer manufacturer have installed a similar program. If you turn a system icon off, you can always turn it back on later.

Starting with Windows 10 build 18252, Microsoft added a microphone icon in the system tray which appears when your microphone is in use.

Turning off a system icon removes the icon and turns off notifications for it.

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off system icons on your taskbar notification area in Windows 10.


EXAMPLE: System Icons on taskbar notification area







Here's How:

1. Open Settings, and click/tap on the Personalization icon.

2. Click/tap on Taskbar on the left side, and click/tap on the Turn system icons on or off link under the Notification area section on the right side. (see screenshots below)



3. Turn on or off the system icons you want. (see screenshot below)



4. When finished, you can close Settings if you like.

In Settings - Turn System Icons On Or Off, the Power option is on but greyed out. This results it not being shown in the notification tray. Reboot doesn't help. Please suggest.

Hi there,

I was wondering if you could offer some guidance.

I have installed the windows 10 upgrade on my laptop and have attempted to hide the "input indicator" system icon.

This works fine until i reboot and the setting has been forgotten.

Any thoughts?

I haven't tested this yet, but you might see if turning off the language bar may help.

Thanks for that option, but the icon that I cannot hide is actually the Language setting.

Currently the icon just shows "ENG".

The icon can be hidden if I remove the german keyboard, but if there are two keyboards then i cannot hide it.

Even if I have selected to hide the language bar.

Can you add another language to confirm this?

Yep, it does the same for me. Turing off (hide) the language bar doesn't help.

 

I've managed to fix the problem *Smile

In order for windows 10 to obey the command to hide the language bar, one must first enable the check box "Use the desktop language bar when it's available".

Once this is enabled, the fact the desktop bar is "hidden" means it disappears all together.

These options appear to override whatever is chosen in the system icons options menu discussed in the original post.

So to clarify, in order to remove the "ENG" icon. Three things must be true:

1. Input Method system icon is set to OFF
2. "Use the desktop language bar when it's available" check box must be ticked in the language preferences -> advanced settings screen.
3. Language bar must be set to HIDDEN in the options menu for the above tick box.

I have a desktop and I would like to enable the power option system notification icon, but it is grayed out (I'm assuming because I have a desktop without a UPS power supply).



I need to get to the power plan options because I switch power plans to high performance when I use DAWs. Right now I just search for "power" in the start menu and it gets me to "choose a power plan" pretty quickly, so it's not the end of the world if I can't get it in the notification area, but it would be nice.

Does anyone know how to enable the power system notification icon on windows 10?

 

I have found a few suggestions, but none helped me, but give it a try:

1. Update BIOS.
2. Update chipset drivers.
3. Reinstalling ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, restores power icon temporarily.
Go to Device Manager, uninstall it and then right click it and Scan for hardware changes.

That's correct. The "Power" system icon is only available for PCs that have a battery or a connected UPS.

Since you need to switch power plans often, then the "Choose Power Plan" context menu would be the best alternative. This way you can switch plans as needed, and be able to open Power Options from the same context menu.
