The calculator app doesn't have a "Create Shortcut" option when you right click on it. Only pin to/unpin from start and pin to/unpin from taskbar.

  3. Windows 10 - cannot delete or unpin a tile from the Start Menu

This is common problem in windows 10. Solution is to rename "yourdamagedtilename.exe" in the Program Files, then pin and unpin it. After that rename as it was originally. Go to Start and unpin damaged tile. Now you are able to pin again correct working
    tile. That`s it.

I'll have to test it again, but I don't think it worked in the preview builds.

How can I remove an item from the start menu that refuses to be unpinned? I accidentally pinned a folder to the start menu and selecting unpin from start does nothing. Also left clicking on the item does nothing.

Hi ArtP welcome to Ten Forums*Smile
Try going to C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs and deleting the shortcut icon.

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1...dows-10-a.html

An easier way is right click the folder icon, click "More" and click "Open File Location" (takes you to the same place) and then delete the shortcut icon.

Thanks Cliff. The first suggestion didn't work because the shortcut icon is not listed. The second easier suggestion didn't work because right-clicking does not include "Open File Location" as an option, only "Unpin from Start" and "Resize". Screenshots are included. "xmltobgl" is the culprit icon.

Ouch! It looks like a case where an icon sticks around after a file has been moved or deleted. If you have Ccleaner or some other all in one cleaner, try checking the start menu shortcuts and running.

I have had a similar problem with a desktop folder icon,
where I deleted it, but had it open in a program,
so for Windows it was still there,
    but... not,
    at the same time.*Eek

    Hello Art, *Smile

Yes, opened in explorer or any program could cause an issue if it considers it in use.

I really don't think it should matter. I would just unpin a File or Folder first, then delete it in file Explorer.

In my case, it was not for a deleted file or folder or one that I planned to delete. Anyway, I will adopt the rule not to unpin something that is active, even in windows explorer, and not to delete a program or file before unpinning it from the start menu if it was pinned manually. I assume that programs with installers and uninstallers will take care of this without a problem.
